The Power of the Draft
April 27, 2008
Our minds are thinking all the time. When you absorb information about a specific product or niche you will find yourself thinking about it throughout your day. Occasionally you will come up with an idea. Maybe it is an idea for an article, a blog post, a domain name, or maybe the next killer ad copy. In any case, you should write it down immediatley.
It does not matter what you write it on. The important part is that you write it down as soon as possible. More than one online marketer has had an idea in the morning, only to forget it by afternoon.
But what if the thought is incomplete? What if your idea is just that, an idea with no substance? Still write it down. Write down every idea no matter how far fetched. Later you can go back and flesh out the idea after some research. Maybe you do end up scrapping the idea, but the fact that you wrote it down and considered all possibilities makes all the difference.
There are several ways to accomplish this. I am sure you are already thinking of a method that works best for you and your lifestyle.
- Carry a small notebook and pen with you where ever you go.
- Carry a USB stick to contain text notes.
- If you have a Wordpress blog, use the draft feature to save incomplete material untill you can get back to it and publish. This saves some intermediate writing steps.
- Text message the outline to somwhere you can retrieve it. Some phones actually will save your text message so you can review it later.
- Carry a small voice recorder that you bought from a late night infomercial (and you thought those things were useless)
Ideas can come from the strangest places and at the strangest times. Mind you, blurting out your next great domain name while having an intimate dinner may not have the desired effect. But writing it down on your way to the bathroom would be totally acceptable.
The next step of this ides is to write every idea out when you are thinking about it. For example if today you have 3 ideas for articles. Write 3 articles. That doesn’t mean you are goint to submit all three articles today, unless you want to. But write all three articles. Submit one whn you are finished and save the others for later.
There are some days you are in a writing mood and the words flow like water. Other days you may not be so creative. If you have a few drafts lying around, you can ensure you keep to your posting schedule no matter if you are in the mood to write or not.
Believe me when I tell you that writing something down while the idea is fresh in your mind it a thousand times better than waiting a few days and then trying to remember all the deatils of your previous thought. The other great thing about writing your ideas down is that it makes room in your head for new ideas. If you know you don’t have to remember that certain something for your email marketing campaign, you mind can be free to come up with new things or expand on the old topics
Get in the habit of capturing ideas 24 hours a day. And writing when the idea is fresh.
