More Info on Keywords
April 9, 2008
No matter what affiliate program you join, you will read about keywords and their importance to your success.
This is where many new marketers hit their first roadblock. Why are keywords so important?
Lets imagine that you have a website. Maybe you are marketing a great product along with thousands of other affiliates. Your website is great and will convert many of your visitors to paying customers. But why will they go to your site? You need traffic to make sales. There is a funny thing about internet marketing that is rarely mentioned. You don’t really get traffic, instead you put yourself in front of traffic that is already there.
Traffic on the internet is massive. It is a constant flow from one site to another as people search for their topics of interest. Your goal is to get your site in that flow.
Imagine that internet traffic is like the line of cabs at the airport. When an interested party looks for transportation they go to the front of the line. Maybe they see the first 5 cabs in line and choose one to ride in (we will forget about the fact that in most places you have to take the first one in line). Well if your cab is 80th in line it will never be seen by the traffic. In a real cab line the cabs in front leave with the passenger. On the internet, the cab stays there to grab the next passenger.
So now lets say you are tired of standing in line with all the other cabs and decide to call yourself by a different “keyword”. So now you are a limo. There are only 3 limos in line so the chances of you getting some customers is far greater.
I hope I have not lost you here, but let’s swing back to the search engines. Lets say the keywords you want to promote have 1.2 million results on google. If your page is on 32, it is not too likely your site will ever be seen. Usually surfers don’t go past the 3rd or 4th page of results. So you pick a new keyword. When you search for that on google you find only 6,000 results. Now, when you promote this keyword, chances are you can get to the front page and your site will be seen by everyone searching for your keywords. (don’t let the high numbers here scare you, most of those results past the 4th page are not worth looking at)
Hopefully you now have a better idea behind keywords and how they serve you. Remember, you don’t drive traffic to your site, that is usually a waste of money. Instead you make sure your site is inthe flow of traffic by choosing the right keywords.
To your success.
